Stainless Steel Wire for Woven Mesh: Holding Aperture to Tolerance
A filter cloth is usually ordered by aperture, but what the weaving mill actually controls is wire diameter, warp tension and weft density. Those three values set the opening, and wire diameter is the one supplied from outside the mill.
On a plain square weave the open area follows the ratio of aperture to pitch, so a small drift in wire diameter moves the open area by a measurable amount across a full roll. This wire is supplied annealed at 550-750 N/mm2 from 0.15 mm to 12 mm, in 304 or 316L, bright or soap-coated, with the diameter band agreed before the order is released.
Annealing matters at the loom as well as at the aperture: warp wire passes over the heddle thousands of times per shift, and a soft temper keeps that repeated bending below the point where the wire work-hardens and breaks.

What Sets the Aperture
Wire diameter band
The aperture is the gap left between two adjacent wires, so the wire diameter and its tolerance enter the calculation directly. A narrow band at the fine sizes is what lets a mill promise an aperture instead of a range.
Warp tension and weft density
Consistent tensile from spool to spool keeps warp tension where the weaver set it, so the crimp and the resulting pitch stay uniform from the first metre to the last.
Weave pattern
Plain weave gives the most stable aperture; twill and dutch weaves trade open area for strength or filtration depth. The wire specification stays the same, but the diameter band becomes more critical as the pattern gets tighter.
Applications
Filtration cloth and filter elements
Screen cloth, filter discs and candle support, usually 0.15-1.2 mm in 316L where the medium is corrosive or the mesh sees backwash cycles.
Guards, screens and safety mesh
Machine guards, insect screens and security mesh from 0.5 mm to 3 mm, where the wire has to hold a flat panel without oil-canning.
Decorative and architectural weave
Woven panels and facades in bright annealed 304 or 316L, where an even tone across the roll matters as much as the open area.
Product Advantages
- Diameter band agreed before production - the aperture calculation starts from a stated tolerance, not from a mill average.
- Tensile held across spools - warp tension stays constant through the run, which is what keeps pitch uniform along the roll.
- Soft temper for heddle cycling - annealed wire takes repeated bending at the heddle without work-hardening to fracture.
- Spool and coil supply - warp spools and weft coils from one source, so both directions share the same diameter basis.
- Grade scope stated plainly - 304 for fresh water and general atmosphere; 316L where chlorides, acids or food washdown apply.
- Traceable lots - heat number on every spool label with mill test report 3.1 on request.
Quality Control
Rod grade is verified before drawing. Diameter is measured inline and sampled at both coil ends, tensile and elongation are tested per heat per ISO 6892-1, and surface is checked for die lines and scratches that would show as a fault line in the woven panel. Spool build and layer alignment are inspected before packing.
Selection and Ordering Notes
- State the target aperture and weave pattern; the diameter band follows from them.
- Give the loom type and the spool weight the creel accepts.
- Confirm the medium being filtered or the exposure environment, which fixes 304 or 316L.
- Choose bright for visible panels, soap-coated where the wire runs through heddles and reeds.
- Provide mesh count, roll width and annual volume for a tolerance review.
