Stainless Grill Grates - Wire Gauge and Pitch Selection
Product Introduction
TOPONE manufactures stainless steel cooking grill grates from 0.15-12 mm wire, bent and welded to customer drawings. Two numbers decide how a grate performs long before the grade of steel does: the wire gauge and the pitch between bars. This page explains what each one controls, so you can brief the factory with numbers instead of samples.

What Wire Gauge Controls
Thicker rods spread the load of the food and resist permanent sag when the grate is pushed at mid-span, but they add weight and cost and they sink deeper into the food. Thinner rods heat faster and leave finer sear marks, but a span that is too thin will bow visibly under a load. As a working reference, barbecue grates for domestic use commonly sit between 3 and 5 mm; commercial and catering grates move to 5-6 mm because they are cleaned aggressively and loaded heavily.
What Pitch Controls
- Narrow pitch (10-12 mm): small items do not fall through; more contact area means more sticking and darker marks.
- Medium pitch (13-18 mm): the common compromise for general grilling.
- Wide pitch (20-25 mm): maximum airflow and char, best for steaks and larger cuts.
Pitch also sets how much the grate expands when hot. A 600 mm wide grate at 18 mm pitch grows roughly 5 mm across the full span between cold and 300 degrees C; the frame must allow for this or the rods bow out of plane.
Gauge, Pitch and Cleaning Together
Heavy pitch deposits burn off easiest on smooth, thicker rods; thin rods at tight pitch hold residue and need more brushing. If cleaning time matters - rental grills, catering fleets - a slightly thicker rod with wider pitch will outlast a fine dense grate in service, even at the same steel grade.
Applications
- Domestic and professional barbecue grates
- Catering and rental grill equipment
- Fire pit and hearth grates
- OEM grill assemblies for appliance brands
Product Advantages
- Rod diameter and pitch made exactly to your drawing
- Flatness controlled after welding to keep rods in one plane
- 304/316 grades with 3.1 MTC for food-contact confidence
- Pickled or polished finish for easier release and cleaning
Quality Control
Rod diameter, pitch and frame flatness are checked on sampled grates per the agreed plan, and welds are inspected for cracks and spatter. Wire chemistry is certified per heat on the 3.1 MTC.
Selection and Ordering Notes
- Send the grate drawing with rod diameter, pitch and overall size.
- State the duty: domestic, catering or rental.
- Choose the grade for the environment: 304 indoors, 316 near the coast or pools.
- Specify finish and whether edges need deburring.
- Confirm packing method to protect the rods in transit.
