Micro Spring Wire on Precision Wound Spools for Tangle-Free Pay-Off
Product Introduction
Below about 0.5 mm, wire stops behaving like wire and starts behaving like thread. It will not push, it will not straighten itself, and if one turn crosses another on the spool it pulls a loop instead of feeding.
This micro spring wire is wound with a controlled traverse pitch, layer on layer, so each turn sits in the valley of the one below. The result is a spool that pays off at constant tension from the first metre to the last, which is what a high-speed coiler needs to hold coil diameter.
Available from 0.15 mm to 12 mm, with the fine range 0.15–1.0 mm supplied on spools from 1 kg to 25 kg.

Why Winding Decides Pay-Off
Traverse Pitch and Layer Locking
Too coarse a pitch leaves gaps and the next layer sinks into them. Too fine a pitch and adjacent turns press on each other, so the wire lifts two turns at once when the coiler pulls. The window is narrow at small diameters, and it changes with wire size.
Winding Tension
Wound too loose, the layers shift in transit. Wound too tight, the wire takes a set and comes off with a curl the straightener cannot remove.
Spool Barrel and Flange Condition
A scored barrel grips the first layer, and a damaged flange catches the last. Both are checked before winding.
Spool Types We Supply
Plastic Spool
Light, non-marking, and the usual choice for 0.15–0.6 mm where spool weight matters for handling.
Steel Reel
For larger spool weights and for wire that will be run repeatedly; the reel survives return and reuse.
Pail Pack
A coil dropped loose into a pail, paying off over the top. Used where the coiler is set up for pail feed and spool changeover time has to be short.
Pay-Off Behaviour on the Coiler
Over-End or Side Pay-Off
Over-end pay-off needs a spool that will not cross over; side pay-off with a rotating spool needs balanced winding. Tell us which your machine uses.
Brake and Dancer Setting
Micro wire needs a light brake. Excessive tension straightens the cast and changes the coil diameter that comes off the tooling.
Applications
Precision Compression Springs
Micro springs where coil diameter tolerance is a function of wire diameter consistency and pay-off tension together.
Medical and Instrument Springs
Small springs for instruments and devices, where the wire must run clean and free of handling marks.
Electronic Contacts and Wire Forms
Fine formed parts produced on high-speed machines, where a single tangle stops the line.
Product Advantages
- Layer wound with a controlled traverse pitch, so turns do not cross and the wire pays off without tangling.
- Spool weight from 1 kg, matched to the run length of a small coiler rather than forcing a large coil.
- Diameter tolerance of ±0.01 mm in the fine range, which is what holds coil diameter on micro springs.
- Grade, diameter, weight, tensile and splice count marked on every spool.
- Plastic spool, steel reel and pail pack options, so the same wire fits different pay-off systems.
Quality Control
Chemical composition, tensile strength, diameter checked at the start and end of each spool, surface condition under magnification, and a pay-off trial on a sample spool before the lot is released. A mill test certificate 3.1 travels with each shipment.
Selection and Ordering Notes
- State the diameter and the spool weight you want in kilograms rather than metres, since that is what the coiler can handle.
- Tell us whether your machine pays off over-end or from a rotating spool.
- Give the spool barrel diameter your holder accepts, or the DIN size.
- State the tensile range and whether a low-cast, straightened condition is needed.
- For fine wire below 0.3 mm, ask for the pay-off trial report with the lot.
Tell us your coiler model, spool holder and run length, and we will match the spool size and winding tension to it.
