Clutch Spring Fretting Wear: Failure That Starts at the Contact Point A clutch spring rarely breaks from a single overload. It wears out quietly at two or three places: where the coil bears on the housing, where the end presses on the release lever, and where adjacent coils touch as the spring compresses. The mechanism is fretting, small oscillating slip between surfaces held in contact. It removes material, generates oxide debris and starts fatigue cracks at stresses well
