0.5mm 304 Spring Wire - Resistivity and Spot Welding
Product Introduction
TOPONE supplies 0.5 mm 304 stainless steel spring wire with a soap-coated surface for high-speed spring coiling. Many of the springs and wire forms made from this size are later joined by resistance spot welding - to a terminal, a plate or a second wire. The electrical resistivity of 304 is what makes that possible, and understanding it helps set the welding parameters. Coil weight, tensile class and packaging are arranged per order.

Why Resistivity Matters for Spot Welding
Resistance welding works by passing current through the parts and letting electrical resistance generate the heat. Stainless steel at about 72 micro-ohm centimetres is roughly 40 times less conductive than copper, so a modest current makes intense, localised heat at the wire-to-wire or wire-to-plate interface. That is why 0.5 mm 304 wire spot welds easily with compact bench welders, and why copper electrodes stay cool: the heat prefers to stay in the steel.
Practical Welding Notes for 0.5 mm Wire
- Use low inertia electrode force - fine wire shifts easily under the electrode.
- Weld times are short, typically a few cycles, because the small section heats fast.
- The soap coating should be removed from the weld zone; it burns and contaminates the electrode face.
- Expect some softening at the weld nugget - the local structure reverts toward the annealed state.
- For corrosion-critical joints, clean and passivate the weld area after welding.
Where This Combination Is Used
- Switch and relay contact springs welded to terminals
- Sensor and probe wire forms joined to pins
- Fine mesh and basket assemblies spot welded from coiled wire
- Medical and laboratory wire components
Product Advantages
- Consistent 0.5 mm diameter for repeatable weld current density
- Soap-coated surface for fast coiling, easily cleaned at the weld points
- Certified chemistry per heat for predictable electrical and weld behaviour
- 3.1 MTC with every coil lot
Quality Control
Diameter is laser-verified along the coil, tensile per batch, and surface finish checked for coating uniformity. Chemistry including the elements that affect resistivity is reported on the mill certificate.
Selection and Ordering Notes
- Confirm 0.5 mm or state your diameter within 0.15-12 mm.
- State whether ends must be bare for welding, or fully soap coated.
- Give the tensile class required for the spring.
- Confirm coil weight and spool type.
- Request the 3.1 MTC with resistivity-relevant chemistry.
