430 Stainless Steel Wire in Food Equipment: Where It Belongs

430 appears in food plants far more often than its reputation suggests, but it appears in specific places: dry contact zones, non-acidic products, and areas cleaned with water rather than chlorinated or acidic agents.

The reason is the grade itself. Ferritic 430 carries 16-18% chromium and no molybdenum, so its resistance to chloride pitting sits below 304 and well below 316L. Clean-in-place cycles built around sodium hypochlorite or acid sanitisers are exactly the conditions where 430 stains and pits first.

Where those conditions are absent, 430 earns its place: no nickel in the cost structure, low thermal expansion, and strong ferromagnetism, which matters on lines that rely on magnetic separation or metal detection.

How to Decide the Grade

Ask what the cleaning agent is

This single question separates most 430 applications from 304 and 316L. Water and mild alkaline detergent favour 430; hypochlorite, peracetic acid and acidic descalers rule it out.

Ask whether the contact is wet or dry

Dry conveyors, chutes and dry storage rarely hold an electrolyte long enough for pitting to start. Wet contact, standing product residue and condensate do.

Ask about the compliance route

Food contact compliance is assessed on the finished article, through the surface finish, the cleaning regime and migration testing where required. The wire grade is one input to that assessment, not a certificate on its own.

Applications

Dry conveying guides and chutes

Wire guides and rails in dry product handling, where the wire sees abrasion rather than liquid and is cleaned by wiping or dry steam.

Dry storage racks and shelving

Racks for packaged goods, dry ingredients and non-acidic products, formed from 3-8 mm wire into frames and shelf edges.

Magnetic separation and detection hardware

Parts that must respond to a magnet, such as separation grids and detection test pieces, where an austenitic grade would be too weakly magnetic.

Product Advantages

  • Honest scope - supplied for dry and non-chloride food zones, with 304 or 316L quoted where washdown involves chlorine or acid.
  • Strongly magnetic - responds to magnetic separation and metal detection equipment that austenitic grades do not trigger as clearly.
  • Nickel-free cost structure - the saving shows at coarse diameters, where nickel dominates the price per kilogram.
  • Low thermal expansion - about 10.4 x 10-6 /K, so frames stay dimensionally stable where equipment heats and cools.
  • Annealed for forming - 450-650 N/mm2 for 0.15-12 mm wire bent into guides, racks and grids.
  • Traceable lots - heat number on every coil label with mill test report 3.1 on request.

Quality Control

Rod grade is verified before drawing, diameter is measured inline and at coil ends, and tensile and elongation are tested per heat per ISO 6892-1. Surface is inspected for scale, scratches and die lines, since a rough surface holds residue and starts pitting sooner in any grade.

Selection and Ordering Notes

  1. Name the cleaning agent and its concentration: this decides the grade more often than the product does.
  2. State whether contact is wet or dry, and whether residue stays on the part between shifts.
  3. Confirm whether the part needs to be magnetic for separation or detection.
  4. Give the bend radius and diameter band for the forming process.
  5. Provide sizes and annual volume for a tolerance and packing review.

Send the grade, diameter, cleaning regime and contact condition for technical confirmation and quotation.
