Thread Insert Wire - Why the Diamond Section Matters
Product Introduction
TOPONE draws stainless steel profile wire for helical thread inserts (wire thread inserts, Helicoil type). What looks like a simple round wire is in fact a precision diamond-shaped section: two flanks that form the internal thread and two edges that lock into the parent thread. The geometry of that section decides whether the finished insert grips, floats and threads smoothly. Grades 304 and 316, drawn to profile from 0.15 mm upwards within our 0.15-12 mm capability.
Product Specifications
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Section | diamond / rhomboid profile for wire inserts |
| Grades | 304 / 316, other austenitics on request |
| Profile tolerance | flank width and height held to insert-maker tolerance |
| Temper | hard drawn for spring-back of the insert |
| Surface | bright drawn, clean for coiling |
| Delivery | coils or spools, 3.1 MTC per lot |
What Each Part of the Section Does
- The two flanks become the new internal thread face - their width sets the thread bearing surface and the gauge fit.
- The two outer edges key into the parent thread, transmitting load into the host material.
- The section height and angle set how tightly the insert winds and how the bottom coil locks against the tang break.
- Profile symmetry keeps the insert square in the hole; an off-centre diamond makes inserts that lean and jam.
Why Temper Is Part of the Geometry
The insert must spring open slightly when screwed in and then grip. That behaviour comes from the temper of the wire as much as from the shape. Hard drawn 304/316 gives the stored elastic energy; a profile that is geometrically correct but too soft produces loose inserts, while over-hard wire fights the winding machine and cracks at the diamond edges.
Common Problems We Help Avoid
- Inserts that fail go/no-go gauges - usually flank width variation along the coil.
- Winding breakage - profile corners too sharp or inclusions in the steel.
- Loose locking - temper below specification.
- Scratched flanks - die wear; visible under magnification before winding.
Applications
- Helical wire thread inserts for thread repair and reinforcement
- Screw-lock and free-running insert types
- Inserts for aluminium and magnesium castings
- MRO and aerospace-style thread restoration
Product Advantages
- Diamond section drawn in-house, geometry held along the coil
- Temper matched to insert winding and locking behaviour
- 304 for general service, 316 for corrosive media
- 3.1 MTC with profile and mechanical data per lot
Quality Control
Profile dimensions are checked with optical section measurement along each coil, temper verified by tensile test, and surface inspected for die marks. Chemistry per heat on the 3.1 MTC.
Selection and Ordering Notes
- Send the profile drawing with flank dimensions and tolerances.
- State the insert size range the wire will wind into.
- Mention locking type - free running or screw lock.
- Confirm grade 304 or 316 for the service medium.
- Request profile measurement data with the shipment.
